Shantiniketan, meaning the “abode of peace” is a renound cultural and educational hub in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India, approximately 152 km north of Kolkata,It was established by the Tagore family and gained global recognition through the vision of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, In 2023, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 1921, the school founded by Rabindranath Tagore evolved into Visva-Bharati, a unique central university where the aim was to study the unity of humanity transcending religious and cultural boundaries. Classes were and, in some cases, still are held in the open air under trees.
Shantiniketan is famous for its vibrant festivals, most notably, the annual Poush Mela, Joydev Mela, and Basanta Utsav which feature local handicrafts and performance by Boul singers.
Birbhum district is home to six significant Shakti Peethas which are major pilgrimage sites for devotees of Goddess Sati/Parvati. These sacred sites are linked by the mythology where parts of the goddess’s body fell to earth during Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance of sorrow, after her self-immolation at her father’s yagna. Devi Durga’s another name is Aparna, from where our homestay is named.
In Aparna Homestay, we provide all comforts which a traveller needs while travelling. All the rooms have fans, split ACs, geyser, Water Kettle, Tea/Coffee sachet, emergency bathroom kits etc. The Homestay is run by a couple, the husband is a retired very senior officer from a central Public Sector undertaking and the wife is a senior coordinator of a public School. After travelling all over India during their working life and living in Delhi NCR, now running this quaint Homestay became their passion.
